Nieuw album Sermon On The Rocks verschijnt 16 oktober

Op 16 oktober verschijnt via V2 Records het nieuwe album van Josh Ritter, Sermon On The Rocks. Sermon On The Rocks is geproduceerd door Josh met Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, Emmylou Harris) en telt twaalf nummers die in twee weken tijd werden opgenomen in de Parlor Recording Studio in New Orleans met Matt Barrick van The Walkman op drums, bassist Zachariah Hickman, gitarist Joshua Kaufman en pianist Sam Kassirer.

Over wat hij wilde voor Sermon On The Rocks is Josh Ritter duidelijk: ‘I wanted to make something grand. I wanted it to swing hard. I wanted to peek through death’s keyhole. I wanted my monster to run. I wanted to sing songs that I had written in stretches of frenzy. I wanted to fall in love with every note. I wanted to hold each one and let it slip away like ribbon through the hands. I wanted to make something important to me and to no one else. I wanted it like I’ve never wanted anything in my life. I wanted it because life is short and I wouldn’t want to leave it without giving it all of my love. I wanted to play messianic oracular honky-tonk.’

Sinds 1999 heeft Josh Ritter zeven albums – Josh Ritter, Golden Age Of Radio, Hello Starling, The Animal Years, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, So Runs The World Away en The Beast In Its Tracks – en een EP (Bringing In The Darlings) uitgebracht, waarvan The Beast In Its Tracks uit 2013 door NPR Music werd omschreven als ‘gorgeous and glorious’ en Pitchfork stelde ‘Beast is contemplative and forgiving, a means of burying one relationship to commit to another, and Ritter nicely evokes the excitement and resignation of such a transition.’

In 2011 maakte Josh Ritter tevens zijn debuut als auteur met de roman Bright’s Passage, dat een jaar later in de Nederlandse vertaling De Wonderjaren van Henry Bright ook in ons land verscheen. In zijn recensie voor de New York Times schreef Stephen King hierover: ‘It shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist.’

Dat Josh Ritter een zeer begaafd en verhalend tekstschrijver is, wordt op al zijn albums duidelijk. Eigenlijk is elk nummer van Josh Ritter een mini-roman. Zo ook Getting Ready To Get Down, de eerste single van Sermon On The Rocks.
